Exquisite oil paintings Houston can call its own

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Dr. Dixie Hamilton Jr. was interested in art at an early age. His passion and natural talent were recognized as a teenager when he was awarded two scholarships for art lessons at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

By 1966, he had dedicated himself to using oils, developing an impressionistic style of painting that captures moments in nature, between families and more. Dr. Hamilton became fascinated with Texas landscapes in the 1980s, particularly wildflowers. In his bluebonnet paintings, he’s able to accurately depict the delicate balance between the rugged yet vibrant beauty of the Lone Star State.

Dr. Hamilton likes a little variety, too. From many trips to the Northeast over the years, he developed a feel for painting New England landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes. He’s also had fun using photos from family gatherings and recreating the intimate scenes on the canvas. Portraits also are part of his portfolio.

After putting significant time into his craft while juggling the responsibilities of a private medical practice, Dr. Hamilton was recognized in 1987 as a finalist in the National Landscape Competition, which was sponsored by The Artist’s Magazine.

Most recently, Dr. Hamilton has been molding his newest pieces of work in the form of clay sculptures.
